JOINT APPRENTICESHIP & TRAINING COMMITTEE (JA&TC)

WHAT IS A BRICKLAYER?

Bricklayers work in various aspects of building, industrial, commercial and residential construction. They build walls, partitions, chimneys and other structural forms from brick, block or other masonry material. They work with mortar using a trowel, as well as working with chisels, jointers block hammers and powered saws.

Much of a bricklayer's work is done outdoors and generally depends upon suitable weather conditions. Bricklaying is a very strenuous trade which requires much repeated stooping and repeated heavy lifting. A bricklayer needs to be able to work in a variety of duties requiring close tolerances and must be able to work well at various heights.

 

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

• Must be 18 years of age before apprenticeship employment.

• Must have your own transportation.

• Must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States as appropriate to federal laws.

• Must have at least 8 years of education or the equivalent.

• Must be physically capable of performing the work of trade to be learned.

WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM SPECIFICS?

• It is a three (3) year program.

• You will receive related classroom instruction.

• Starting pay is 50% of the Journeyman's rate.

• You start adding to your benefits ( two pensions, health & welfare and vacation funds) once you start working for a Union Contractor.

• Pay increase for each four month period for the first year then every six months for the remaining two years.

WHAT ARE THE FRINGE BENEFITS?

Fringe benefits are paid IN ADDITION TO to your hourly wage amount. All our apprentices get these benefits once they start working for a union contractor. These amounts ARE NOT DEDUCTED from your hourly pay. Our Fringe benefits are PRE-TAXED so all union workers get to use all the benefits tax free.

•   $4.50 Health & Welfare (Health Insurance, this insurance starts after only 360 hours on the job.)

•   .90¢ Local Pension

•   .50¢ IU Pension

•   .01¢ SMCA (Signatory Masonry Contractors Association)

•  .15¢ JA&TC (This is where the money comes from to pay for the apprentice training)

•   .25¢ an hour is deducted from the hourly wage which goes to the BRICKLAYERS • CERAMIC TILELAYERS VACATION FUND. This money is paid out once a year.

WHAT DO I NEED TO APPLY?

• Valid Arizona Driver's license.

• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States of America.

• Certificate of 8 years of education or a certificate of equivalency.

WHAT DOES THIS PROGRAM COST?

• This program cost the Apprentice, NOTHING!

$$$ NO TUITION, NO SCHOOL LOANS TO PAY BACK$$$ !

• Our Apprentices EARN WHILE THEY LEARN!

Putting away up to another $2,912 into their pensions per year if the Apprentice is fully employed by a Signatory employer.

Putting away as much as $520 into the yearly vacation fund.

After only 360 hours of union employment (3 months) Apprentices then have health insurance, if the apprentice is married with children, they are covered too! Once the Heath Insurance is established, each Apprentice only needs to work 66 hours a month to maintain the insurance.

• The JA&TC program is paid for by the collective bargaining agreement between the Union Contractors and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local #3 AZ-NM.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF EACH APPRENTICE?

• Show up, on time for Classes, and participate. (Two nights a week and every other Saturday)

• Show up to work on time for the Union Contractor you are assigned to.

• Pay your Union dues.

• Go to a minimum of 6 Union meetings a year. (Union meetings are on the first Wednesday of every month)

WHAT TOOLS AND MATERIALS DO I NEED?

• All Bricks, Blocks, Stones, AAC, Tile and mortar are supplied FREE OF CHARGE!

• All Apprentices who are excepted into our program and complete one year in the program will receive one kit of tools, each kit of tools is worth over $300.

• EACH KIT OF TOOLS CONTAINS: 1-High quality 4' level, 1-High quality 12" trowel, 1-High quality 20 oz Brick Hammer, 1-High quality sled-runner, 1-High quality margin-trowel, 1-High quality tuck-pointer, 1-High quality pointing trowel, 1-High quality roller raker, small bag of line pins, small bag of line trigs, 1 High quality "S" jointer, 1-High quality tape measurer, 1-High quality modular tape rule, Masons line, Line blocks, Grout bag, Marking pencils and 1-High quality tool bag to carry it all in.
